Wildlife abounds throughout the Pike River Wilderness property. Large mammals including moose, deer, bear and some of the 400+ timber wolves that roam Superior country frequent this lush wetland area for the sustenance of their survival. Fishermen will delight in pursuing the catch of the day: northern pike, walleye, bass and pan fish. The river is ideally suited for camping and exploration by canoes and kayaks.  The two lakes are best navigated in a small fishing boat.

The Pike River runs north to flow into Lake Vermilion (33 miles away). Lake Vermilion is Minnesota's fifth-largest lake (49,000 acres), and one of the most popular for fishing and boating. Other nearby recreation destinations include the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Voyageurs National Park (45 miles) and of course the Superior National Forest where many transient animal populations are protected.

A wonderful resource for more information about the populations of the species in the water and on land is the State of Minnesota's Department of Natural Resources. The DNR website has an accurate Lake Finder and Conditions tool and a current report on fish populations in the fresh waterways throughout the State.

St. Louis County, Minnesota has 658 lakes - pretty amazing!
